legislation would not extend to private sales, the gun lobby has sent a letter to senators reiterating its unequivocal opposition. it also plans to grade lawmakers as it does on where they stand on gun control issues and will grade them on the support for the compromise and whether they allow debate. mark zuckerberg is introducing a new are group today. it will advocate first for immigration and education reform, zuckerberg is getting help from big names, zuckerberg says he need to train and attract the best and the brightest and allow those who are educated here to stay here.

department when i started, now it's fully involved in what goes on in washington and what goes on in your state houses. so we're developing that. we're going to figure out how that fits into prime time with al jazeera america. and there are a number of changes with this channel and i'm very very excited to be in on sort of the ground floor. there is already an established ground which is current, and i'm the next level up. >> stephanie: i want to offer you captain america's underpants if i'm not needed anymore. you can have my set. >> well, thank you. >> stephanie: now, so what i -- why -- why did you decide to make the move? this is big, big news in the business? >> yeah, well two reasons. as you know my area of great interest is business, so i have

an attraction to the idea of entrepreneurship, and there aren't many chances to start up a chan well the kind of resources that al jazeera is going to put into it. you are building literally everything from the beginning. and the second part of it so al jazeera around the world -- i'm very familiar with al jazeera english, because i broadcasted on cnn international to the rest of the world. and they win a lot of awards and do a lot of great journalism, and i think there's an american audience that will appreciate their commitment to the news. so the -- two parts of that their commitment to the quality of news they want to put on and it's a brand new organization, and i'm not sure in my lifetime i'm going to get to set foot in that big of an organization as

it grows. it has been a great 12 years at cnn, and -- but sometimes you just have to shake it up a little. >> stephanie: i think you and i got traded for a draft pick to be named later, because we have traded places. >> that's right. >> stephanie: i was talking to someone from al jazeera and i think it's really true. a lot of people view fox and msnbc as more corporate, and al jazeera is known for really doing journalism, which in america seems like it may lean liberal, but as jim always says facts have a well-known liberal bias, but if you look at the issues in the news, gun control, marriage equality whatever then i guess we're liberals.

>> we all kind of believe in fundamental liberal rights and i think that's -- al jazeera is very interested in the topics that will relate to american viewers. they definitely have a view that main stream us in has become corporate. it has got those interests. we tend to be attracted to people who hold important positions or celebrities, and that's okay, but there's a set of story telling that is harder to do -- you know when i get on that cnn bus and drive across the country and talk to people, i almost found that the most fun talking to regular folks. i could always tell you about a recession or recovery from my conversations with ordinary people faster than through economic reports. so real people give you more information. they have more of a finger on the pulse than gathered statistics do. and i felt the al jazeera folks

were interested in that kind of news gathering. which i am very very interested in. >> stephanie: and i love that bus tour. in my opinion it really all came together when shirley jones sang along. >> that's right. that really made it. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: it's interesting, though, i think you are right, just -- the people will see when it debuts because i think there has been some unfair perceptions. one of my best friends, her parents are half israeli and half american, and she said they watch al jazeera all the time. >> yeah. look perceptions are perceptions. the only way those perceptions will be overcome is to have a product out there that holds up to scrutiny and media critics will be all over us when it happens, and they should be. they should say are you really putting out fair journalism -- i

don't love using the word objective anymore, i objectively think hurricanes are damaging and murdering people is bad, so i don't know about objective. but are we fair? are we going to do that sort of thing? and i think we'll be held to a very high standard and the success of al jazeera in america will be living up to that standard. they seem to have made a commitment in that, and i would like to see how this unfolds in coming weeks. but in the end that's -- the proof is in the pudding. people will watch it or they won't. and there is another issue, and that is where people will see it. getting carrying on major stations will be interesting.

>> stephanie: what is your sense of what is happening? obviously not a great jobs number last week. >> sure. people had to make decisions about how they are not hiring because of the sequester. my fear about america right now -- i think things are generally going well. if you have money, good credit and a job, and maybe you were invested in the stock market and bought a house, things are okay with you. but we have bifurcated as a country. we will become a lot more like the countries that we tried really hard to not be like. where there are a vast number of poor people, a smaller number of middle class people and a larger number at the top. we gutted the middle class in this country, and that is a

very, very hard thing to rebuild. it's like a neighborhood where houses start to get boarded up and they become crack houses and it's way harder to get rid of that than prevent it from happening. and we all have to realize that we'll all be worse off if we don't grow back that middle class and give the poor an opportunity to prosper. if you are poor and you don't have money, credit or a house, you don't have a good way out of poverty. if you are wealthy or middle class, you can. >> stephanie: ali a lot of talk about the president's new budget yesterday. clearly many not happy about social security being on the table. there is so much speculation about is this just a political play because the republicans aren't going to come to the table on raises taxes a dime. but i have to say, you probably know my dad ran with goldwater

in 64, but i just have never seen a republican party in my lifetime like this. >> yeah, they are struggling. i'm going to tell you, there are some great republicans out there who are fighting against the tide to become the main stream again. and i think some of them may succeed, i think we may get to the 2016 presidential race and have a really good contest with some really strong republicans. i think this time around there was a cast of characters who are not representative of the decision making that is necessary. republicans are going to have to get over their new no taxes. i wish the president had sort of played his game a little harder around new year's eve when the debt ceiling thing was going on because we need more taxes. this chain cpi, i don't think it's that terrible because when prices go up on certain things

we buy, we as consumers do make choices to substitute for other product. sorry the highest respect for elizabeth warren i'm so happy she is in the senate -- >> stephanie: me too. and nancy pelosi agrees with you on that. >> yeah, we're in a world of tough decisions, stephanie. there just aren't any easy decisions anymore. it is going to hurt. the best thing we can all do -- david [ inaudible ] from the "new york times" wrote a small book about how the budget works. it's just interesting to understand what gets spent and how and then every one of us no matter whether we're liberal or conservative make an informed decision to say what am i prepared to give up, because it is going to be about giving something up. it's not going to be about getting more right now. >> stephanie: yeah, i do agree with you on -- that was the only leverage the president had when the taxes were going to go up

anyway. and that's the thing. i just don't understand how you govern, let alone with people who will not negotiate at all. and a lot of people are saying this is why this happened. >> but you are not old enough to remember this, stephanie i know you know this because you understand politics and history, but this is a problem the democratic party had. it is just cyclical. the republican party is just broken right now. and if they are seen in four years as not be successful governing partners they will lose again. we can talk about the demographic trends changing, and i think that's true, but the reality is, the republican party is going through a brokenness where they need to sit there and say we need to put people front

and center who understand budgeting, finance, and how to negotiate, and that you can have friends in the other party. and they could take the reins of government next time around. >> stephanie: no hilary will crush them like a bug. arms, and explosions looked into the shop after the massacre and found run hundreds of violations. a new nbc wall street journal out today talked about gun control and immigration reform. on the former 55% of people want stricter gun sale laws but there's a huge partisan divide here. 82% of democrats support tougher gun regulations and only 27% of republicans do. on immigration, 64% of respondents say they favor a path to citizen tip for undocumented immigrants. republicans oppose at 51%. however, when told a path to citizenship would include having to pay fines and back taxes,

at hadia's funeral, and i couldn't get over the idea of how real they were to me. they were just like my family. hadia pendleton was me, and i was her, but i got to grow up, and have a career and family, and the most blessed life i could ever imagine, and hadia, oh, we know that story. just a week after she performed at my husband's inauguration, she went to a park with some friends, and got shot in the back because some kid thought she was in a gang. hadia's family did everything right, but she still didn't have a chance and that story, the story of hadia's life and death, we read that story day after

i'm a story teller. as a story teller i really think that adventure works to draw out people into a story. i have this long relationship with "national geographic". it's afforded me the opportunity to organize expeditions with their encouragement that have taken us by kayak literally around the world. historically a lot of people who go out on adventures go out for adventure's sake which i applaud. but this day and age i think you have to go out with a higher purpose. everywhere we went we talked to people about climate change, overfishing. all those things we've saw we've seen literally everywhere we've gone. a big part of our motivation in going out and having these adventures is to bring back stories that we can share. ya know, the tools are incredibly important. technology has changed but the goal is the same. it is to enlighten people using adventure as the trigger. on each of these adventures, at

one point, i'll just be sitting on a beach, looking at that horizon line and reminding myself how lucky i am to be able to be out there and to be both learning for myself and then sharing. i know that we're not going to change the world from the seat of a kayak but if i'm able to bring those stories back and share them and i manage to change the life of one person or two or three or four then it was totally worth it.

other things. and this will be another thing for the republicans, anything that helps build infrastructure. our economy is poised for progress as long as washington doesn't get in the way, the president said yesterday. yes. his physical 2014 budget increases the spending cuts that are already hurting our economy. and that's the other thing unfortunately -- the other bad political place that the president is coming from is this sequester is really bad. what he is trying to do is stop that, at least. at least cuts in place that are not as horrible as the sequester. he said the plan reduces the deficit, and makes necessary investments because we can do both. the numbers work. there is not a lot of smoke and mirrors. the president yesterday.

>> obama: -- reducing the deficit and making the investments necessary to grow our economy. and we can do both. >> stephanie: and he talked about closing the loop holes for the rich. he said there are is no excuse to keep these loopholes open. and he said when it comes to deficit reduction, i have already met the republicans more than halfway. >> obama: i'm reallying to accept these as part of a compromise. >> stephanie: what do you think the next sentence is? congressional republicans promptly attack the plan. mitch mcconnell said it's not serious. >> it's not serious. serious plans -- >> stephanie: that's my favorite part. it's just another left-wing wish list.

>> it is. >> stephanie: the show is unbelievable crosby stills, gnash, jack back is hosting, right? >> that's correct. >> stephanie: wow. wow. >> it's -- we're going to talk about autism and point out what is going on in the world of, you know, all of the families that are experiencing and impacted by autism, but we're also going to have a really good time and it's going to be a great show. >> stephanie: you talked about there is this great l.a. times piece about you and steven and you talk about awareness being huge, and there are so many people who are new to the analysis, 1 in 50 children and adults are with autism so it's something everybody needs to know about. >> exactly. and the statistics are like 1 in 38 kids.

i think if you talk to any teacher anywhere, they will tell you in their classrooms there are at least a couple of kids with this issue, whether severe for mild form of it. but that's the crazy thing. the prevalence keeps rising. we don't know why. autism speaks is tirelessly pursuing finance and research trying to come up with some kind of answers, and they have come up with many clues, but there's still no cure. there are many interventions and many dietary things that can be done, and behavioral therapies, but there's no official cure so they have to keep going, you know. they have to keep getting funded so they can -- you know fund these studies -- >> stephanie: right, continue the research. i know you got involved -- i met henry, your son, who i think is

just hilarious. do you guys remember you said come in here and sit down and say hello to stephanie. and he sits down and looks at me and says well this is awkward. >> yeah, henry has asperger's syndrome. and one of the great things about these individuals is not a lot of filtering or editing. it comes out in pure form, and that's fantastic if you can me. we work on social etiquette stuff all the time just like with any teen, but you are going to get a straight shooter. >> stephanie: yeah he is hilarious. and it's interesting, a i'm sure you have been paying at attention, because unfortunately adam lanza had asperger's and i heard from a lot of parents at the time that were very

sensitive that that is not the cause of becoming violent. >> oh, i think the autism community was hurt by that because it is certainly one human being did not represent the entire community of autistic individuals. there was probably a lot going on there. you can have autism and you can have something else. you can have a psychiatric disorder. so we don't know enough about that case -- at it certainly was not welcomed by the community to have that be put out in the press the way it was -- >> stephanie: right. >> and such a difficult time for the country anyway, so -- >> stephanie: and you said one in 88 children in the u.s. have an autism spectrum disorder. obviously the vast, vast majority. and several senators made that case that they are more likely to hurt themselves than someone else. and i think people unfairly

focused on that one aspect. >> oh, absolutely. that was a very dark moment particularly when there are so many parents who -- both parents working and yet putting just endless effort into getting their kids to therapies or doing parent-lead therapies and doing everything they can to help their child kind of be folded into community in a typical of a way as possible and then you know, to have that kind of stigma attached. we don't want people to be fearful of the autistic individual or child. it's certainly not helpful when something like that happens, but that's the media world that we live in. >> stephanie: right. kristin you were recorded in the l.a. times piece saying i have been awarded with the time to help him because steven is always out on the road. so we're grateful that papa

keeps pounding the concert trail. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: your film is awesome. tell us about that. it was inspired by your son's experience with musical theater. >> actually we -- we wanted to do a film -- a couple of friends and i wanted to do a film about autism and the idea was to follow some autistic kids around for a year, and see what we got. and the director came up with the idea that we have got to have them do something. and we heard about this musical theater called the miracle project, and we just said let's check it out. and we saw what was going on and this amazing woman who coaches these kids -- autistic kids and their siblings so they can do something together, and it was very clear this is it. we're going to do a musical theater production document it

for a year as well as everybody's individual and family lives and it came together and turned into a nice little film. sadly it is still very relevant -- morell vabt than when it came out because as i mentioned the rates continue to -- to increase. so -- yeah it's very relevant still. >> stephanie: obviously we're going to raise money this saturday, and raise awareness, which is so key. and steven says that's why autism speaks exists they can talk eloquently about the condition so the musicians don't have to. i'm just a car player man. [ laughter ] >> stephanie: that's right. he said i don't like listening to playback, i got to do something. and we're like hey, that's cool with us. >> yeah you got a special moment. and he started with the guitar and then switched to base.
